Seaman First Class Leonard L. HumphreyReflections on this veteran's military serviceSubmitted by Jeff Humphrey
Leonard joined The Navy with the help of his parents (because he was only 17 1/2 years old) on 10/06/44. He was assigned to the destroyer escort USS LeHardy on 05/05/45. They spent the next approximately 4 months performing escort duties in the Pacific between Pearl Harbor, The Marshall and The Caroline Islands. They arrived at Wake Island on 09/04/45 and stood by as the Japanese Admiral surrendered the island. A detail from the ship went ashore and raised the pole which once again flew the American flag over Wake Island. The rest of his duty was at Apra Harbor in Guam working at a small craft repair base. A few years after the war, he moved his growing family to the brand new community of Lakewood.
