Fireman Apprentice Thomas Richard Muren
One of The Boys of Del Valle Park
From the U.S. Navy MIA/KIA Unrecovered list:
On April 3, 1972, Muren, a crewman of the destroyer USS John R. Craig (DD 885), was reported missing at shift turnover when he failed to report for underway watch in the engine room. At the time, the ship was 70 miles off the coast of North Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin. He was last seen by his shipmates early that morning. An immediate search of the entire ship, then a coordinated search by three ships and a helo, found no sign of him. He was presumed dead on April 3, 1972, and he remains unaccounted for. This servicemember from Lakewood was killed during the Vietnam War and is one of the 43 men listed on the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Plaza and referred to in the poem, The Boys of Del Valle Park. The poem is inscribed on the memorial and was written by original Lakewood resident and Vietnam veteran, Dennis Lander. |
