Reflections on this veteran's military service

Submitted by Jose Romero
I am originally from a small valley by the name of Pajoaque, New Mexico, about 16 miles north of Santa Fe. I enlisted in the Navy on September 15, 1951. I completed boot camp training in San Diego on November 13, 1951 and was assigned to the USS Shields DD596 where I served until my discharge on September 15, 1955. Before going in the Navy I worked in Los Alamos, N.M. as an Ironworker. Jobs were scarce, so I came to Los Angeles looking for work. After a few months, I met my future wife at a dance and we were married in May 1958 and we are still together. I have a stepdaughter, Julie Roberts, who lives in Ontario.

My wife and I have lived in Lakewood since 1962.
